Cabinet Painting vs Refacing vs Replacing: How to Decide for Your Kitchen
Paint cabinets when the boxes and doors are solid and you like the layout; reface when you want a new door style on sound boxes; replace when the boxes are damaged or the layout does not work. Many Matthews kitchens from the 1980s and 1990s have solid oak cabinets that are good candidates for paint.

When Painting Is the Right Call
- The boxes are plywood or solid wood and are not swollen.
- Doors are flat and square, with no peeling veneer.
- You like the layout and the door style, or can live with it.
- The goal is a lighter, updated color or a cleaner look.
When Refacing Makes More Sense
Refacing keeps the boxes but replaces doors and drawer fronts and covers the box faces with new veneer. It is the choice when the boxes are sound but the door style is the problem, for example raised cathedral panels you want to swap for flat shaker doors.
When to Replace
- Sink base or dishwasher-side boxes are swollen from leaks.
- Particleboard is crumbling or shelves sag.
- Doors are thermofoil and peeling (the film usually cannot be painted successfully).
- You want to move appliances, add an island, or change the layout.
What Makes Painted Cabinets Last
Degreasing every surface, scuff-sanding, a bonding primer, two coats of a cabinet-grade enamel, and enough cure time before heavy use. Doors are best sprayed off the boxes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is painting cabinets worth it?
If the boxes are solid, usually yes: it costs far less than new cabinets and changes the look of the kitchen.
How long do painted cabinets last?
Many years with proper prep and a cabinet enamel. Edges around handles wear first.
Can I paint over oak grain?
Yes. The grain shows through unless it is filled before priming.
Should I change hardware too?
It is the easiest time to do it. Different hole spacing means filling and sanding old holes first.
