Painting Bathrooms in a Humid Climate: Paint, Exhaust Fans and Peeling Ceilings

By Matthews Painting Pros · Published · Updated

Painting a ceiling in a small room

Bathroom paint lasts when two things are right: a moisture-resistant paint, and an exhaust fan that pulls steam out of the room. Peeling paint and mildew on bathroom ceilings are signs that the moisture is winning.

The Paint

Use a bathroom paint with mildewcide, or a satin or semi-gloss finish that sheds moisture. Flat wall paint absorbs moisture and holds mildew.

The Fan

An exhaust fan should vent outdoors (not into the attic), run during showers and for a while after, and be sized for the room. A fan venting into the attic can cause moisture and mold problems there.

Prep

  1. Clean mildew with a cleaner and let the surface dry fully.
  2. Scrape peeling paint, especially on the ceiling over the shower.
  3. Spot-prime bare spots and stains; a stain-blocking primer over water stains.
  4. Two coats of bathroom paint.
  5. Wait for the paint to dry before using the shower; the label gives the time.

Why Bathroom Ceilings Peel

Steam rises and condenses on the coldest surface, often the ceiling over the shower. Without enough ventilation, moisture gets behind the paint. Wrong primer over previously glossy or oil-based ceilings can also cause peeling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sheen is best for a bathroom?

Satin or semi-gloss, or a bathroom paint designed for humidity.

Can I paint over mildew?

No. Clean it off and let the surface dry first.

How long before I can shower after painting?

Follow the label; many recommend waiting at least a day or more.

Why does mildew keep coming back?

Not enough ventilation. A properly vented fan matters more than the paint.
