HomeGuide's national benchmark for painting one room is $300 to $1,000 for the walls, or $600 to $2,000 including the ceiling and trim (February 2026). These are national figures, not Matthews prices; the real number for your rooms comes from an on-site estimate.

By Room Type

HomeGuide national per-room benchmarks (February 2026)

Kitchen walls$150 to $250Cabinets and backsplash reduce wall area
Bedroom$350 to $850Primary bedroom $650 to $1,400
Living room$600 to $2,000Size, ceiling height and openings
Dining room or hallway$300 to $1,000Trim and doors add time
Open-plan basement$800 to $2,500Large walls, often new drywall

HomeAdvisor reports a national average of $2,022 for interior painting projects, with a typical range of $965 to $3,089 (updated June 2026).

Why Ceilings and Trim Double It

Walls are the fast part: rolling large areas. Ceilings mean ladders and careful lines; trim and doors are slow brush work. A room with walls, ceiling, baseboards, casings and two doors can take twice the time of walls alone.

What Else Moves the Price

  • Drywall repairs and patching
  • Color changes, especially dark to light
  • Tall or vaulted ceilings
  • Wallpaper removal
  • Furniture moving and protection
  • Minimum job fees ($250 to $500 is common, per HomeGuide)

Saving on Interior Painting

Group several rooms into one job, move small items yourself, keep similar colors, and decide on colors before the painters arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to paint a bedroom?

HomeGuide's national range is $350 to $850 for a standard bedroom.

Why is a small bathroom not much cheaper than a bedroom?

Bathrooms have lots of cutting in around fixtures, tile and cabinets.

Is it cheaper to paint the whole house at once?

Usually per room, because setup and travel are spread over more work.

Does the paint brand affect the price much?

Somewhat. Labor is most of the cost.
