Nail Pops and Drywall Cracks: Why They Show Up and How to Fix Them Before Painting

Nail pops and hairline cracks at door corners are the most common wall damage we patch before painting, and most of them come from normal framing movement, not a structural problem. The fix lasts only if the fastener is reset and the crack is taped; filling and painting over them brings them back.

Why Nail Pops Happen

Framing lumber shrinks as it dries, especially in the first few heating seasons. As the wood shrinks, drywall nails stay put and their heads push out, showing as small round bumps. They often line up along studs or ceiling joists.

Why Cracks Show Up

  • Door and window corners: stress concentrates at the corners of openings.
  • Seams: tape joints can crack if the joint was thin or the framing moves.
  • Ceiling-wall corners: truss uplift in some houses lifts the ceiling slightly in winter, opening a crack at the top of the wall.

When to Worry

Call a structural professional if cracks are wider than about an eighth of an inch and growing, run diagonally across large areas, come with sticking doors or sloping floors, or appear with foundation cracks outside.

The Lasting Repair

  1. Nail pops: drive a drywall screw an inch or two from the popped nail into the stud, then set or remove the nail. Cover both with compound in two or three thin coats.
  2. Cracks: open the crack slightly, embed paper or mesh tape, and finish with two or three coats, feathered wide.
  3. Sand and prime the repairs so they do not flash through the paint.
  4. Paint the whole wall if the old paint has faded or the sheen would show a patch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will nail pops keep coming back?

Not if each one is fastened with a screw next to it and properly finished.

Can I fill cracks with caulk?

Only small gaps at trim. Wall cracks need tape and joint compound.

Why do cracks appear in winter?

Heating dries the framing, and some ceilings lift slightly in winter, which opens cracks.

Is a crack above a door a structural problem?

Usually not. Hairline cracks at door corners are common; watch for widening.
